James Hogan - Tenor

Born in Milwaukee, WI tenor James Hogan is the son of an acclaimed Lyric soprano and classical choral conductor. From an early age James’s musical aptitude was apparent, having listened to his mother teach lessons throughout his childhood. His first public appearance as a soloist was at the age of 8 in a Christmas concert at Disney World. At 16, James founded and served as executive director of a K-5 community theatre program for two years. This expansive musical background allowed James to be accepted on scholarship at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

James became an in demand performer in the San Francisco Bay Area while completing his Bachelors and Masters degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. In addition to performances as Grimoaldo in Rodelinda and Bajazet in Tamerlano at SFCM, James appeared as a concert soloist with many Bay Area ensembles. His concert repertoire includes the tenor solos in Bach’s Magnificat, Handel’s Nissi dominos and Israel in Egypt, Saint-Sæns Requiem, and Mendelssohn’s Ellijah.

Upon the completion of his Masters degree, James traveled to Germany where he performed Tamino in Die Zauberflöte in Weimar, and Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni with the Theatre Rudolstadt. At home in the Lyric Fach, James’s other operatic roles include Belmonte in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Tito in La Clemenza di Tito, Tebaldo in I Capuletti e i Monttechi, and Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte.

With a passion for repertoire, both famous and obscure, James has amassed an encyclopaedic knowledge of classical song literature, obscure opera arias, and masterpieces of musical theatre. With this knowledge he is apt at guiding students to the repertoire that best suits their unique vocal qualities and their own taste as an artist. James believes that every voice has something to offer, and through the development of a strong technique every individual can find their own voice.
